Braces For Children Homewood IL

At Lisa Grant Orthodontics, our goal is to achieve both a great smile and healthy bite. We place special emphasis on interceptive and preventive measures for children. The timing of braces and orthodontic treatment is very important in obtaining an ideal result and preventing future problems with tooth and jaw alignment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first see an orthodontist for braces as early as age seven. The purpose of an early visit is to evaluate whether changes in the child’s skeletal patterns are needed. There are several advantages to early treatment. If detected early, harmful habit can be corrected to avoid further, more extensive treatment.

What are the benefits of an early evaluation for braces?

Early evaluation for braces provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.

Why is age 7 considered the optimal time for screening?

The following early warning signs usually indicate that your child should have an orthodontic exam for braces:

  • Early or late loss of teeth
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Finger sucking or other oral habits
  • Crowding, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
  • Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude or retrude
  • Speech difficulty
  • Biting the cheek or into the roof of the mouth
  • Protruding teeth
  • Teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don’t meet at all
  • Facial imbalance
  • Grinding or clenching of teeth

If your child is approaching the age of seven, it’s time to make an appointment for an initial braces exam with our Homewood, IL orthodontics office. The American Association of Orthodontists has recommended that the proper age for a child’s first visit to the orthodontist is no later than seven years of age. Grant Orthodontics strongly encourages this practice.

By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile.

What are the advantages of interceptive treatment?

Some of the most direct results of interceptive treatment are:

  • Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • Reducing the need for tooth removal
  • Reducing treatment time with braces
